I work as a Registered Nurse at the Medical Rehabilitation Center under the Public Authority of Disabled Affairs .


PSYCHIATRIC & MENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT (REHABILITATIVE CARE)


My duties and responsibility are to provide comprehensive care to the residents, who permanently reside at our center and have various diseases and disorders. These residents are bedridden or wheelchair-bound due to medical and neurological issues, and they require complete nursing care for their daily activities.


In terms of the daily schedule, I have three shifts.

β€’ At the beginning of my shift, I have to check psychotropic stock and issue medication as per order and also ensure that emergency facilities as well as inventory in order.

β€’ Secondly, I receive endorsement from the previous shift, which includes information about the residents' conditions, any changes in medication, investigations reports, diagnostic evaluations, etc. Then I conduct a bedside handover for each resident.

β€’ Subsequently, I begin my routine work based on the assigned tasks which include observing the personal hygiene of the residents like bath, dressing, mouth care, and grooming which are performed by assistant nurses.

β€’ I also provide wound care for patients with tracheostomy, gastrostomy, and colostomy.

β€’ Additionally, I provide necessary care for patients who require BIPAP support.

β€’ Emergency management of patients with seizures, choking, falls, and cardiac arrest by providing CPR, ECG monitoring, oxygen administration, suction, first aid, etc.

β€’ Other responsibilities include:

β€’ Monitoring and recording patient vital signs and reporting to the physician if there are any variations in the reading.

β€’ Conduct physical examination and report and record any significant signs and symptoms.

β€’ Administration of medication to the residents by following the ten rights of medication administration.

β€’ Feeding for residents by oral/ Nasogastric tube feeding/ PEG feed via a feeding pump.

β€’ Provide a safe and healthy environment for the residents.

β€’ Attend doctor's rounds and carry out doctor's orders.

β€’ Cooperate and coordinate with healthcare team members to prepare effective patient care plans.

β€’ Carry out sample collection for laboratory investigation and other tests, and diagnostic procedures, evaluate the results, and inform the doctor.

β€’ Collaboration with various departments such as laboratory, physiotherapy, biomedical, housekeeping, laundry, kitchen, and pharmacy to provide comprehensive care to the residents.

β€’ Providing assurance and clearing the doubts of family members when they visit the patients.

β€’ Training and monitoring junior staff.
